Razor Sharp Carving Tools in 2 Minutes
Mike sharpens against the clock to take a blunt and damaged carving tool, to a razor sharp edge in 2 minutes.
Mike uses his old aluminium oxide bench stone, an Arkansas slip stone, and a Record Power buffing machine that has been fitted with felt wheels.
With a little bit of honing compound the edge is back to razor sharp with minimum effort and in less than 2 minutes. This short video is part of a free educational programme, offering downloadable projects, plans and tutorials for woodworking enthusiasts.
A companion tool range is also available, which has been developed in cooperation with Record Power, a woodworking tool manufacturer with a heritage spanning over 100 years.

There is a big difference between sharp and razor sharp. A razor-sharp tool glides through timber effortlessly leaving a polished sheen behind it.
In this segment, Mike opens a brand-new set of tools from their packaging, and shows us how to take the cutting edges to the next level, from factory sharp tool to razor sharp in 2 easy steps. We look at honing using inexpensive equipment, using a leather strop, and power stropping with a Buffing machine.

Record Power has released a new range of Carving Tools to be compatible with the Carving by Numbers step-by-step system.
Carving by Numbers is an educational programme that was developed by professional woodcarver, Mike Davies, over 30 years ago.

Carving a Spoon from Old Walnut…it was as hard as rock!
Mike selects the hardest lump of walnut in the woodshed to make a decorative spoon.
He really should follow his own advice on how to select good carving wood, because this was like carving rock.
Anyhow, the end result is a delicate and decorative little gift.
Mike creates a unique method of holding the spoon so that both hands can used to control the carving tool. We put the ‘Significant Six’ carving techniques into practice, focus on grain orientation, and dash out of the workshop to find a suitable finish.

When starting out as a woodcarver, it can often be a daunting task to select a good beginners set of tools, from the vast selection that is available.
This is a short, but informative excerpt from Mike’s Woodcarving Foundation Skills DVD. In this clip, Mike breaks down the complex assortment of carving tools into easy-to-understand categories.
First, Mike explains the various categories of cutting-edge profiles that are available, and then we examine the shapes of steel between the handle and the cutting edge. Mike then introduces a selection of tool profiles that he has found can be used to complete a wide selection of projects, and he recommends them as an ideal beginners or general-purpose set.

Learn how to sharpen and maintain your carving tools.
Sharp tools are essential for effective woodcarving. Whether you buy brand new tools, or restore old ones, you will need to become a master of sharpening.
This is a short, but informative excerpt from Mike’s Woodcarving Foundation Skills DVD. In this segment, Mike runs through the sharpening process, whilst restoring a severely damaged carving gouge. We learn about different grinding methods and some important considerations when using high speed grinding machines.
Mike then examines the various methods for honing your tools and demonstrates how to hone a shaped gouge and a flat bench chisel. Following honing, we look at the use of slip stones to remove the burr that is often created, and finally Mike demonstrates how to use a strop.
